Ask us anything!

We'd love to answer your questions in this forum... who we are, what we do and why we do it. Ask away!

Hi, My husband and I love your Youtube channel. We have also got some chichens. 7 hens and 1 rooster. I have just noticed the rooster has some small black spots and I was wondering if you have any idea what this could be?

Thanks for reading,

A Belgian fan :-)

@whitehouseonthehill thanks for the quick response. we did have 2 weeks of frost last month. But nothing extreme.

Is there anything I should to for him now?

I read online that I should rub Vaseline on the comb when it’s going to freeze.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’d do to help prevent further frostbite and possibly heal what has already happened.

I am considering raising chickens for egg production (can't get behind the culling process yet but one day...). What breeds are best not only for egg production but for someone starting out? I will be starting small (no more than 6?)

The best for eggs: Leghorn, Australorp, Barred Rock, Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpington. There are also production breeds like Red Layers or Cinnamon Queens if you want to be guaranteed to have females.

I was wondering, where do you guys live? I know you lived in Kansas City before; are you still in Missouri? If so, are you ok saying around which area? (Asking as a fan living near St. Louis!)

Yes, we live in the Kansas City area, about an hour north near St Joseph, Missouri.

  • Which have the better temperment around children ? I'm starting my flock in the spring, and would like to start with a mix of the two but hearing conflicting stories on which is best around kids. Whatcha think ?
  • We enjoy raising these chicks so much. Watching these guys grow from our egg to table ready is a great accomplishment. Actually putting them in the freezer for me isn't hard, but the loved ones are having issues with the thoughts of eating there pets as they call them now.... Me BBQ chicken 😋... Them....Roy, Sweet pea.....and so forth. How do I work around this? Ernest.
  • My grandson Micah 2 and a half years old, loves watching you guys. He is totally fascinated with chickens and their eggsHe watches all of your YouTube videos and crows all the time, his way of course. We feed up together everyday. Our little chicken farm is growing quite rapidly with our feed cost growing as well. Do you have any ways that you guys control your feed cost? I am an X IT guy myself and love doing things like this and always have. I have been raising a few quail also. I am trying to figure out the best way to manage our chicks and quail.
